With everything happening in the US political landscape—and the mounting challenges I see within my own profession—I’ve reached a point where silence is no longer an option. I’m BKay, a passionate social worker by trade and a lifelong lover of learning by influence, and I’ve created this space—BKay’s Brain—to share every thought that flutters through my mind. This is my invitation to you to join me on a journey of raw, unfiltered reflection, exploration, and sometimes, unabashed outspokenness.
At BKay’s Brain, my mission is as clear as it is urgent: to spark thoughtful conversations and ignite curiosity by sharing my inner world—my musings, doubts, revelations, and wild tangents. I firmly believe that every perspective matters, that every spark of thought contributes to the vibrant symphony of our collective energy. In a time when conformity often trumps innovation, I encourage critical thought, celebrate diverse viewpoints, and stand by the conviction that anyone, regardless of their background, can be a storyteller and an agent of change.
I entered the field of social work with a vision—a vision that saw social work not merely as a profession, but as a radical practice rooted in social justice. I never imagined that my creativity would manifest in artistic endeavors; instead, it has always flourished in the realm of thought, in the subtle interplay of ideas and reflections. I’m not an artist in the traditional sense—I color in coloring books, I don’t paint, and while I might doodle on the margins of my notebooks, it’s in my writing where my creativity truly lives. Yet, despite these personal quirks, what I’ve witnessed in our society is disheartening: performative advocacy, rigid gatekeeping, and a pervasive reluctance to embrace genuine, transformative change.
I am inspired by groundbreaking thinkers and creators who dare to challenge established norms. The writings of bell hooks, Britt Wray, and Glenn Albrecht resonate with me deeply—they offer frameworks for understanding trauma, cultural humility, and the importance of reimagining our connection to both people and nature. I also find strength in the voices of modern creators like Emma McAdam of Therapy in a Nutshell, Rebekah Ballagh of Journey to Wellness, and Allie Brosh of Hyperbole and a Half, as well as the provocative insights shared by Mickey Atkins, Swoop, D’Angelo Wallace, Milo Rossi of Miniminuteman, and BJ Investigates on YouTube. Their work, in many ways, mirrors my own struggle to reconcile the chaos of our times with the need for grounded, compassionate care.
The current state of affairs—both in the political arena and within the framework of modern social work—has left me profoundly unsettled. I didn’t become a social worker to reinforce outdated systems or to let bureaucratic structures suffocate the human spirit. Instead, I embarked on this path to challenge the status quo, to think creatively and critically, and to harness the power of imagination in service of healing and community-building. I stand for a version of social work that is vibrant, responsive, and relentlessly questioning—a field where justice and empathy are not just buzzwords, but guiding principles that shape our every action.
This blog is not a manual or a set of rules to be followed dogmatically. It is a living, breathing collection of reflections, questions, and stories—a starry night sky of ideas that invites you to see where you already stand and to recognize that, in this complex, ever-changing world, none of us are truly alone. I share my struggles, my victories, and yes, even my offbeat, wild tangents because I believe that these are the threads that, when woven together, can reimagine what it means to care in a system that so desperately needs to evolve.
Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to engage with my thoughts. I invite you to dive in, share your insights, and join me as we unsettle the norm and work towards a future that is more just, creative, and compassionate for everyone.
